IDEA FINALISED...

I have decided to do my news story on Facebook's recent policy change allowing 13-17 year olds to change their privacy restrictions. I did some research on this Facebook news story so that I know what information to include in my script.  Here are some articles below on the story:

Thinking of Ideas...

Today my lecturer asked all our seminar class what our plans were for our short movie pieces. I did not really have a clear plan but I've decided that I will be doing a news story. Since I am a journalism student I thought it would be ideal to create a news story. I believe that it will be beneficial for me to see what it takes to create a news story, how much effort it takes, what goes in to it, the preparation, the planning and so on. I decided that I will like to do a news story that will include asking individuals for their opinion on a subject. After my seminar, I decided that I will create a news story revolving around social networking sites. Whilst doing some research, I saw an article about how Facebook has lifted privacy restrictions for teenagers between the ages of 13-17. I thought this would be a good subject for a news story; however I also looked at creating a news story on the pros and cons of Facebook. Hopefully the subject of my news story will become clearer in the next few days!

Examples of Multimedia....

My lecturer gave us a task to find three industry examples of a piece of outstanding use of mixed media or multi-media. At first I was very confused as to what I was expected to do. So, firstly I researched what multi-media was on these sites:

  1. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multimedia
  2. http://www.w3schools.com/html/html_media.asp
From these sites I learned that multimedia refers to a piece that uses a combination of different media forms, such as: pictures, music, text, sound, animation. Multi-media is used in various industries like film, games, advertising, music videos.

Based on my research I found that special effects is a form of media that is used heavily in films, games and animation. With my research on multimedia done, I decided that I will carry out analyses on:

1. Avatar

Avatar, a science fiction film written and directed by James Cameron, released in 2009. The film set in the mid-22nd century takes us to a spectacular new world beyond our imagination. I chose Avatar because I think it really showed an outstanding example of multi-media. The type of multi-media that was used in the film made it stand out, and that was its use of computer generated imagery (CGI). Firstly the director started to develop the film in 1994 however at the time the technology needed was not available. I think just this alone would inspire many others, especially film directors that you should never give up on your dream. Even though it took over 10 years for his vision to be fulfilled he was still determined and persistent that it will happen!

2. Grand Theft Auto V

Grand Theft Auto 5 is an action-adventure video game, which is part of the GTA game series. The game is played from the third person perspective in an open world environment, displaying a form of interactive media. The game features realistic surroundings and the characters within the game also speak. I chose this game as I believe it is very relevant at the moment since it just was released. Personally, I am not a huge fan of video games but I believe that this one has gained a lot of customers and followers.

3. uk.msn.com

This website, is a collection of internet sites and services provided by Microsoft. At the top of the website they have icons for social networking websites where you can follow them on Twitter or like them on Facebook. So displaying these icons in turn also advertises these social networks. The website also contains links to different news stories. Within the media industry it allows news reporting to not be confined to traditional media outlets e.g. newspapers, online news, broadcasting. Through this website it involves global audiences and tells stories with technology, which in turn allows audiences to interact with others regarding stories (e.g. e-mail, twitter). This website also contains embedded videos where viewers can watch news stories, popular and funny videos.

The Purpose of this Blog....

I have set up this blog for my university Multimedia assignment, in which I have to create a 'short mixed media artifact' of a factual or news story or a product promotion or marketing advert. I also have to write up a script and draw a storyboard. When I first realised that this will be my task, I was quite pleased as I have done this sort of assignment before in my A Levels for Media. Then, I had to create a music video and title sequence, whilst also editing the video and I had to provide a script and storyboard as part of my planning. Therefore, I would say that my experience would definitely help me for this assignment. However, over the two years I spent studying Media for my A Levels I know that editing can be a rather complex. Hopefully, this time around my editing skills would have improved!
